Proof of spiral development
This proof assumes that Historical Materialism's stages theory is correct. Orthodox Historical Materialism does already mention change thru spirals for a three stage spiral.
Orthodox Historical Materialism calls the change between opposite stages "negation of the negation". One stage negates the previous stage, i.e. is it the opposite of that stage. The second stage is later negated by another stage. This third stage is similar to the first stage. It's possible that, if development continues past three stages, the fourth stage could be the opposite of the third in some way but not similar to the second stage.
However, that would contradict Historical Materialism's "negation of the negation" that these stages form a spiral in themselves.
The change from stage 2 to stage 3 to stage 4 should follow the same change between opposites as with any three stage spiral.
Stage 2 was already seen to be the opposite of stage 1. So, the four stage spiral looks like the spirals used throughout this web site.
This means that, if it can be shown that a social or biological development follows a spiral pattern, the next stage of development can be predicted. Content copyright: Nathan Davis 2003-2010 If you've questions or comments, please contact me: nathan_k_davis@after-capitalism.com |
